PIQUE Blog Hills Hideaway 01

Tucked away in the Perth Hills, the Hills Hideaway by PIQUE is a stunning example of how thoughtful design, clever use of light, and quality materials can create a home that feels completely at one with its surroundings. With sweeping views across the valley and a calm, grounded feel, this home is all about connection – to nature, to light, and to the land it sits on.

The brief for this build was as beautiful as it was personal. The homeowners had lived on this block for years, and after losing their original home in the bushfires, they wanted their new space to honour the site they loved so much.

The result is a home designed entirely around the outlook, with open-plan living zones and elevated positioning that make the most of the natural landscape.

Nature at Every Turn

From every room, you’re greeted by a new perspective of the valley. The design captures the feeling of being immersed in nature, with large expanses of glass and warm, earthy finishes that help the home blend seamlessly into its surroundings.

The home’s colour palette was chosen to complement its environment, using muted tones and textures that reflect the hillside landscape. From the living area, you get the sense of floating just above the treetops.

Framing the Landscape

Windows and doors were a defining feature of the Hills Hideaway design, chosen as much for their performance as their visual impact. With a strong focus on natural light and views, every opening was carefully positioned to frame the surrounding bushland and capture shifting sunlight throughout the day.

The home features Jason Windows Black Night Sky frames, with large Raking Windows to showcase the sweeping valley outlook. A mix of Jason Windows Fixed Windows, Awning Windows, Sliding Doors and Hinged Sentry Doors bring variety and functionality to the design, allowing for easy ventilation, natural airflow, and effortless transitions between living spaces and the surrounding landscape.

Together, these elements achieve a seamless indoor–outdoor flow, providing the wide, uninterrupted views the homeowners envisioned while keeping the home comfortable all year round.

Overcoming Challenges

Building in the Perth Hills comes with its share of challenges. The sloping site and elevated position required careful planning to ensure the home was positioned perfectly to maximise the outlook. Through collaboration, expertise, and careful logistics, the PIQUE team delivered a project that felt effortless, even in a complex location.

Sustainable by Design

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design of Hills Hideaway. The home’s orientation maximises passive solar benefits, allowing natural light and warmth in winter while the surrounding bushland and extended eaves provide cooling shade in summer.

All windows and doors feature Single Glazed Clear Low-E Glass, providing energy efficiency and comfort year-round while remaining a cost-effective alternative to Double Glazing. For privacy in wet areas, Single Glazed Satinlite Obscure Glass was used, ensuring light can still filter through without compromising privacy.

These thoughtful glazing choices, combined with the home’s design and natural shading, reduce reliance on artificial heating and cooling, making Hills Hideaway a sustainable and comfortable retreat.
